Mata pensel mula berlari di atas balapan kertas graf
semi-log berwarna hijau, menyambungkan titik-titik data yang diperoleh dari
dalam makmal elektronik industri. Sebuah graf ‘phase angle versus frequency’ untuk
eksperimen ‘active filter’ dah siap dilakar.
Saya duduk sekejap di luar makmal. Menghirup udara luar yang
lebih nyaman daripada air-cond dalam makmal tu. Itu makmal ke benua Artik? Gila
betul staf ‘Eskimo’ kat FKE ni! Macam manalah diorang boleh survive dalam suhu
macam ni hari-hari? Makan polar bear dengan walrus hari-hari agaknya. Tapi kurus
kerempeng pulak. Saya duduk tak sampai dua jam, hidung dah mula meleleh.
Sekejap je lagi boleh kena selsema. Tapi memang membazir pasang air-cond sampai
tahap macam ni. Patutlah FKE ni katanya paling banyak habiskan duit UTM untuk
bayar bil elektrik. Bayar kat benda yang tak patut.
Tangan dibiarkan sekejap atas meja. Saje nak ‘dibakar’ terik
mentari. Nak menyerap sebanyak mungkin haba, nak dibuat ‘bekal’ sebelum masuk
balik makmal. Biarlah kulit ni gelap sikit pun. Ini lebih syurga daripada
‘neraka beku’ tu.
Saya sekadar tersenyum. Time tengah hari, kadang-kadang hati
kita ni mengeluh. Terik dan silau sangat sampai nak tengok depan pun, mata kena
jadi sepet. Belum masuk kelas dah pecah peluh jantan. Bila dah rasa sejuk macam
ni, barulah kita rindu akan kehangatan sang suria. Kalau tak, sampai bila pun kita tak reti
bersyukur. Kata orang, nikmat yang ada takkan terasa, selagi ianya tak lenyap
dari depan mata.
Dalam al-Quran pun ada cerita pasal matahari, kan? Surah
Asy-Syams, surah ke-91.
1. By the sun and its brightness.
2. By the moon as it follows it (the sun).
3. By the day as it shows up (the sun’s) brightness.
4. By the night as it conceals it (the sun).
5. By the heaven and Him Who built it.
6. By the earth and Him Who spread it.
7. By Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul), and Him Who
perfected him in proportion.
8. Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is
right for him.
9. Indeed he succeeds who purifies his own self (i.e. obeys
and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic
Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).
10. And indeed he fails who corrupts his own self (i.e.
disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic
Monotheism or by following polytheism or by doing every kind of evil wicked
deeds).
11.Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their
transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by
following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin).
12. When the most
wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel).
13. But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (peace be upon him)]
said to them: “Be cautious! (Fear the evil end) That is the she-camel of Allah!
(Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!”
14. Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord
destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e.
all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)!
15. And he (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.
Saya masuk balik makmal. Ning dengan Chong dah senyum sampai
telinga. Nak gelakkan aku la tu.
“You kat luar ke tadi? Tak tahan sejuk?” tanya Ning yang
pakai sweater hitam – tapi masih menggigil. Katanya, dia pun dah tak boleh
tulis apa-apa. Otak dah beku.
“Dalam sejuk sangatlah….” jawab saya.
“Ni ada satu graf lagi… Tolong lukis ye…”
Saya gelak. Saya pun capai kertas graf tersebut, dan keluar
untuk ‘menyedut’ haba lagi.
